Razred & Trokut / Dom mladih

Dom mladih is an existing building, partially completed building of public, cultural and social purpose. It has a total area of 10,400 m2, a height of 35 meters and is owned by the City of Split.

Members of the author’s team that won the architectural competition are Frane Grgurević, Edo Šegvić and Grga Udovičić, while the main designer was Frane Grgurević. Construction began in 1979, but was stopped in 1984 due to financial reasons.

Today, the building is used by a large number of cultural and social organizations despite its unfinished state, while the building is managed by the institution Multimedia Cultural Centre Split.

With projects of minimal interventions in the spaces inside the building under the management of the MCC, the process of reorganization and reconstruction of the building in the direction of a cultural, social and creative complex made up of individual spaces intended for different programs was started. The space is continuously used by a large number of associations and institutions that have various cultural and artistic programs and initiatives. In the space, individual interventions were carried out according to the needs of the users and in accordance with financial possibilities, however, most of the space is still in a state of disrepair.

Despite the inadequate spatial capacities, through the development of the way of use and management, the Dom mladih has established itself as a complex of various spaces for the production and presentation of contemporary culture and art. The model of the cultural center is an innovative spatial-organizational model that is being successfully developed under currently very limited financial conditions. The goal of the project is a completed, functional, and energy-efficient building in which a cultural and creative center has been established. Until the realization of the overall project of reconstruction and furnishing of the existing building, individual spaces are arranged according to the system of minimal interventions.  The common “Razred”, the Classroom and “Trokut”, the Triangle terrace are just some of the spaces arranged according to this principle.
